چکیده

Drought stress is a major contributing factor to plant mortality across the globe. effects are often studied at local scale, but recent advances in remote sensing allow for observations of water status broad geographic scales. The vegetation optical depth (VOD) derived from satellite-based surface microwave emission has been shown be sensitive canopy content, which increasingly recognized as an important indicator relations and incipient plants. We develop index quantifies normalized difference between night- daytime diurnal VOD retrievals (nVODr) apply it western U.S. determine relative sensitivity plants variations supply (soil moisture) atmospheric demand (vapor pressure deficit -VPD). Canopy content dynamics were most soil moisture variation intermediate climatic deficits where tree cover transitions grass cover. Soil Moisture Content

The assessment of soil moisture content and surface roughness from remotely sensed data is of primary importance for improving agricultural techniques of conservation farming such as yield forecasts, scheduling irrigations, fertilization. SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) remotely sensed data may provide a powerful tool for indirectly retrieving these agricultural surface parameters over large are...

Predicting large wildfires across western North America by modeling seasonal variation in soil water balance

A lengthening of the fire season, coupled with higher temperatures, increases the probability of fires throughout much of western North America. Although regional variation in the frequency of fires is well established, attempts to predict the occurrence of fire at a spatial resolution <10 km2 have generally been unsuccessful. We hypothesized that predictions of fires might be improved if deple...

Radar Measurement of Surface Water Content Dynamics under Wheat Canopy

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) with a suspended 1 GHz horn antenna was deployed for measurement of soil water contents and dwatj wheat canopy reflections over bare and electrically terminating sutjaces. Sutjace reflection (SR) magnitudes and propagation times (PI) were used to independently calculate bulk soil dielectric constant and soil water contents. Measurements over wheat canopy shows tha...

Assessing Relation of Soil Hydrophobicity and Soil Water Content and Determining Threshold Moisture of Organic Soil Samples

Soil water content is the most effective factor associated with the hydrophobic and hydrophilic changes in a soil. Water repellency in soils, is not a permanent feature; it can be reached in the dry season and reduced or eliminated in the wet season It can be said that in terms of moisture, there is a critical region that is defined as the threshold moisture content, where in lower moisture, th...

GPS interferometric reflectometry: applications to surface soil moisture, snow depth, and vegetation water content in the western United States

GPS interferometric reflectometry is a new environmental sensing technique that can be used to measure near-surface soil moisture, snow depth, and vegetation water content variations. The spatial scale of this technique, ~1000 m, is intermediate to that of other in situ sensors (<1 m) and satellites (>100 km). Soil moisture and snow depth retrievals have accuracies of 0.04 m/m and 0.04 m, respe...
